Cascade Advanced Energy Facility

X-energy, Energy Northwest, and Amazon are partnering to deploy 4-12 Xe-100 SMRs in Washington State, the first project in X-energy and Amazon’s effort to deploy at least 5 GW of new nuclear by 2039.

About the Project

New Nuclear for the Pacific Northwest

Safe, Scalable Carbon-Free Power

Cascade’s initial multi-module plant is designed to produce 320-megawatts electric. The participation framework provides an opportunity for public power utilities to subscribe to up to 50% of the power output. Should additional multi-modules be pursued in the future, a similar opportunity for public power participation would be available. The goal is to ensure public power utilities have an opportunity to participate in new generation resources that can help serve growing electricity needs across the region, supporting homes, businesses, critical public services, and future economic development.

Building on Expertise

Cascade would be sited adjacent to Energy Northwest’s operating Columbia Generating Station, the Pacific Northwest’s only commercial nuclear facility, and an economic pillar of the Tri-Cities for more than 40 years. Energy Northwest would own and operate the new facility, X-energy brings the Xe-100 and TRISO-X, and Amazon has made a direct investment to support early project development.

Powering Progress

Both cloud infrastructure and the regional grid need energy solutions that empower the unprecedented, safely and reliability. The Xe-100 is designed for 95%+ availability, and would bring intrinsically safe energy to the Pacific Northwest that supports long-term grid reliability for every customer, local communities and cloud computing alike.
