The OCNI Balance Means Business Award is one of the Canadian nuclear industry’s most distinguished accolades.
X-energy Canada Recognized for Team Commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
The Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI) has presented X-energy Canada with the 2021 Balance Means Business Award for helping the nuclear industry to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and for being a leader in demonstrating the value of gender diversity in enhancing business excellence.
Katherine Moshonas Cole, President, X-energy Canada, accepted the award on behalf of the team, during OCNI’s virtual Supplier Excellence Awards ceremony.
“We firmly believe when you take an expansive approach to hiring, going broader than traditional sources and keeping an open-minded approach, you end up with not only the strongest candidates, but also a diverse and dynamic team.”

“Our team couldn’t be any prouder to receive this significant award. We thank our project partner Hatch for the nomination, as well as OCNI for recognizing our accomplishments,” said Moshonas Cole. “EDI is a natural outgrowth of our commitment to finding the best talent in Canada. We firmly believe when you take an expansive approach to hiring, going broader than traditional sources and keeping an open-minded approach, you end up with not only the strongest candidates, but also a diverse and dynamic team.”
X-energy Canada’s team composition is only one element of the company’s collective efforts to further EDI. Led by an all-female senior leadership team, more than a third of the company’s employees self-identify as members of racialized groups, with one individual requiring on-site workplace accommodation. The company is taking meaningful action to increase Indigenous access to employment, supply chain and partnership opportunities within the Canadian nuclear industry. To help drive these efforts, X-energy Canada is a member of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB), is enrolled in the CCAB’s Progressive Aboriginal Relations Program, and has initiated company-wide Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training. The company is also a signatory of Equal by 30.
Members of the team also use their voice to advocate for EDI through professional activities outside working hours. Senior leadership participate in university mentorship programs targeting future female engineers; at speaking engagements targeting women and young professionals in the nuclear industry; and on an Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility Council at a community non-profit organization. Additionally, Rosemary Yeremian, Vice President of Corporate Strategy, is the author of an acclaimed self-help guide for professional women.
“The nuclear industry is rapidly evolving to address existential global challenges,” added Moshonas Cole. “The best and the brightest within all communities and groups must work together to tackle climate change and meet increasing world energy demands. By demonstrating our pledge to openness and integrity in all our actions, X-energy Canada hopes to break down barriers to cooperation and accelerate our progress toward a healthier planet.”
X-energy Canada drives the deployment of the Xe-100 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) design by developing partnerships with communities, industry, academia, and society. Our Generation IV technology is the catalyst for the world’s clean energy future, generating significant social, economic and environmental benefits for all Canadians.
